DENVER, COLORADO: A LOOK BACK AT CARLY & JOE'S MOUNTAIN TOP NEW YEAR'S EVE WEDDING
One year ago today, I was photographing one of my favorite wedding days to date. Carly and Joe's New Year's Eve wedding at the Chapel at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado, followed by a rooftop reception at Tamayo in downtown Denver, was everything I could hope for as a wedding photographer. There were so many authentic moments that challenged me, made me crackle, and, as usual, made me cry. (How could I not with a father of the bride who let those tears freely flow?!)
Carly and Joe make me smile. When I look back on these images, I can't help but remember many of the details of the frames. As soon as I landed in Colorado, I drove my tiny rented Versa through a snowstorm towards Joe and Carly's home. The entire drive (well, when I wasn't cursing myself for not having 4 wheel drive) I was in awe--of the snow (so, so much snow!), the clean air, and how the neighborhoods I was driving through made it easy for me to pretend I was an extra in a John Hughes film.
Carly and I had discussed having a "pre-wedding session" in Colorado, but we weren't planning for the weather. We made not only this session happen, but the quickest outdoor boudoir session EVER was snapped up in less than 5 minutes. (HA! I still laugh when I think back on that!) It was 24 degrees out (and quickly dropping!), so after the three of us, alongside Angus & Crosby, piled into Carly and Joe's more snow-appropriate SUV, we stopped next to a median where we hopped out for some portraits under some gorgeous pine trees!
I had such a good time with these two at this portrait session. All of these smiles are genuine. We were cold, we were excited, and we were ready for the next few days! (I arrived in Denver a day and a half prior to New Year's Eve).
Like most wedding days (lets be real), there were hiccups (hello, I'm looking at you, valet!)-- but the day ended up being so much fun. Due to those hiccups, the service ran a bit behind, leaving us less time for family formals, and, of course, portraits. Joe, Carly, and I zipped up the mountain from the Chapel at Red Rocks to an area where we could safely get take photos with what light was left. Let me tell you that between Abu Dhabi's early evening spring sunset in April of last year, to Colorado's quickly sinking winter sun, I gained more experience with lighting than I could have ever imagined!
What follows are a selection of my favorite images from this amazing wedding day. The excitement I got from being selected as Carly and Joe's wedding photographer is pretty much unparalleled, and these two, like everyone else, hold their own special chunk of my heart.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MR. & MRS. MOORE!
And to you, dear reader, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
